Valentine’s Day Wines: A High Quality, Great Value Love Fest

You have no excuse.

Valentine’s Day is February 14th, so we’re giving you a good two weeks to get your wine ordered, chocolates purchased, dinner reservations made, and impress your special someone with your thoughtfulness and planning.  You’re welcome.

Now, the Wine

Everybody is different.  Some may like a deep, rich, silky, red wine with dark berries and hints of mocha, while others may prefer a light, sweet, refreshing wine with flavors of strawberry and raspberry.  Then, there are those people who are obsessed with bubbles - You know who you are.

In the spirit of pleasing everybody, we’ve cherry-picked some highly rated, crowd-pleasing wines that are all under $20!  We’ve also included some wine gift packs from Wine.com that include some delicious chocolate pairings that you’ll absolutely love.

Red Wine

Since your Valentine’s Day will most likely involve chocolate, or maybe even a nice dinner at a swanky steak house, we’re going to suggest a wine that would pair well with both… the king of all reds - Cabernet Sauvignon.  This California Cab from Bonterra received a 92 point score from Wine Enthusiast, and is also a ridiculous value at $14.99.  Bonus points for being organically grown (not a bad conversation piece for V-Day dinner, by the way).

Grab the 2008 Bonterra Cabernet Sauvignon - $14.99

White Wine

Riesling is becoming increasingly popular, and this light, crisp Riesling with flavors of apple and pear from Penfolds received high marks (96 points!!) from renowned Australian wine critic James Halliday.  This Riesling would be a wonderful pairing with a light seafood dinner on Valentine’s Day (and oh yeah, it’s under 20 bucks!!).

Grab the 2009 Penfolds Eden Valley Bin 51 Reserve Riesling - $19.49

Pink Wine

Can’t decide between red or white?  Go Pink!  And why not grab a rosé from arguably the most romantic country in the world - Italy.  This Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Cerasuolo by Cataldi Madonna delivers the cherry, strawberry, and raspberry flavors that you’ll also discover when taking a sniff.  Priced at $17.79 with a 90-point score from Robert Parker, this is what we call a pretty darn good deal.

Dessert Wine

If sweets are your thing, there’s probably not a better pairing than Port & Chocolate.  Port is usually synonymous from it’s namesake, Portugal.  But, there are some killer ports being produced by California winemakers, including this Terra d’Oro Zinfandel Port - a rich, sweet red wine with flavors of cocoa and toffee.  This wine is a steal at $14.29 and received a 93-point score from Wine Enthusiast.  Are you drooling yet?

Grab the Terra d’Oro California Port - $14.29

Or, you could opt for the Tawny Port & Godiva Chocolate Gift Pack - $39.99

Sparkling Wine

You may be thinking about a traditional sparkling wine such as Champagne, but you can change things up a bit and try something new with a Brachetto - a sweet, sparkling rosé wine from Italy with gorgeous flavors of strawberries and raspberries.  Pair this up with chocolate covered raspberries, and now you’re talking deliciousness.

Grab the Sweet Sparkling Rosé with Godiva Chocolate - $39.99

Or, you could grab three different sparklers in this Bubbly Hearts Sparkling Wine Gift Pack - $39.99
