A Dozen Rosé for Valentine’s Day

Rosé is not red. Rosé is not white. The actual color of Rosé varies depending on the grapes involved. In fact, you may recognize colors of pink, purple, or orange smiling at you from your glass. Red-skinned grapes are crushed, and for a short period of time, the skins are allowed to remain in the mix for a couple days. The skins are then removed for the fermentation process. This tactic helps to produce characteristics and flavors more similar to white wine, creating that crisp, light, and refreshing taste we are familiar with today.

Rosé is historically a delicate, dry wine, exemplified by Anjou Rosé from the Loire Valley. However, we are also aware of the sweeter versions of Rosé that became popular in the 1970’s (a.k.a. blush wines). Typically, you’ll find that European Rosé is generally dry, and U.S. versions are generally sweet.

Dry Rosé pairs nicely with crab and lobster for seafood. Grilled chicken is a good choice for this style of Rosé, as well as spinach dip.

The fruit-forward style of Rosé is tasty with sushi (crab again), samosas (the popular stuffed pastry snack), and guacamole.

Sip on wine and share some sweet words that’ll make your loved one blush this Valentine’s Day.

"What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet." ~ William Shakespeare
